“—But I have need of solitude, that is to say recovery, return to myself, the breath of a free light playful air….”—Nietzsche, Ecce Homo

Believe me when I say I have known that need. And I continue to know and indeed live that need of solitude.

There has been a heavy cost though. Friends who did not understand or respect my need to withdraw, to disappear at times, were left behind. Perhaps not surprisingly marriage as practiced today did not suit me either and was left behind too.

Thankfully, as mad tortured Nietzsche puts it: in solitude there is always the “… recovery,” the “…return to myself,” and above all “…the breath of a free light playful air….”

I love that: “…the breath of a free light playful air.”

Long ago I found a way to earn a living while honouring my need for solitude. I acquired a truck driver’s license and took to the open road.

Today I love nature, and I love parks and coffee shops with the widest variety of people around, I have a few close laughter loving friends, and still I cling to and joyously embrace my need for solitude.
