Imagine an environment, the town or city you call home, in which your best self is constantly being appealed to.
Imagine stepping outside and everywhere you turn you experience summons and exhortations to goodness, courage, excellence and community. Imagine a place where the ubiquity of the symbolic and artistic messaging to self and communal improvement creates a sort of betterment feedback loop where better people and true leaders support and encourage one another towards their own continual development and mastery.
Now step outside today and tell me what you see. Or stay inside and tell me what you watch on your home entertainment system, computers, and personal devices.
What a jarring abyss lies between these two worlds, the contemporary reality we live in our citified day to day world and my imaginary example of universal continual development and excellence.
Believe it or not places such as my imaginary betterment utopias do exist all around us today.
Even here in our fragmented Western Civilization.
Enter the precincts and locker rooms of professional and especially championship calibre sports teams and that is what you will experience. That’s what the pros refer to when they extol the virtues of a winning ‘culture.’
It’s nothing less than a top to bottom appeal to hard work, commitment, and excellence on an individual level and dedication and sacrifice on a collective team basis.
It’s not fantasy.
And believe me, one day it will spread outside the closed doors of sports locker rooms.
It better…
For us all….
