Zen is unthinking oneness with the instant we are living now.
And I suppose you could say there are different degrees of Zen.
There can be the full unalloyed engagement in a tea ceremony.
Or Bushido, the discipline and art of the samurai swordsman.
Arts of movement such as yoga, musicianship and the dance come to mind as well.
Sports too. To be as Joseph Campbell put it: ‘in form.’ To be one with the race, the flow of the game, the competition or combat.
And let’s not forget sex, the complete absorption in the sensual present as say illustrated in the Kama Sutra.
But here’s the thing about these apparently bounded Zen disciplines: they have a tendency to spill over the borders of the disciplines involved and work their insidious way into every facet of a practitioner’s life.
From a narrow field of ‘expertise’ they can become a Way of Life.
The centredness and oneness that Zen demands in one small seemingly circumscribed pursuit can blossom into a Centredness and Oneness with Life as a whole.
Unthinking Oneness with the instant we are living Now…
That is Zen….
