Call me hopelessly behind the times social media-wise.

  I’d correct you though.

‘Hopefully’ behind the times, is better.

‘Faithfully’ behind the times, I like best.

“Do blogs matter anymore,” I’ve been asking myself? Have readers migrated over to places like Reddit, FaceBook, Instagram, or wherever else host opinions and encourage ‘creativity?’ There definitely seems to be a different vibe around this blogging space from when I naively started out some fifteen years ago.

With this in mind I visited Reddit yesterday for the first time. Learning about ‘sub-Reddits’ I randomly punched in ‘Joseph Campbell’ to see if that would be a good fit to hop into a discussion as the Omphalos Cafe. The tone of the dialogue and the quality of the posts did not impress me at all and after scrolling a short space of time I threw it over.

“Nope,” I said to myself, “this place is not for me.”

I’ve said before the Omphalos Cafe is different. As I quoted Hermann Hesse the other day, I’ve always imagined it for “madmen only.” Churches and temples I would add typically have some form of threshold guardian posted outside their doors. “This place is not for your daylight logic,” the sentinels warn, “so leave it outside or stay away!”

The modern world is moving and ‘evolving’ fast out there. I put the term ‘evolving’ in quotation marks as it isn’t a true evolution, a genuine growth, but more a rapid technological change having nothing to do with growth or evolution.

Life evolves much slower. At its own pace.

And the Omphalos Cafe can stay just where it is. Behind the times.

Where do you go for your morning news and context amidst the fracturing of our media and social discourse landscape? Let’s have fun with it at omphaloscafe@gmail.com.
