I am standing on the Montreal Metro, our subway, and 80% of the riders are on their phones. I glance down to spy on what the young lady sitting next to me is absorbed in and she is scrolling through short video after short video.
Lyrics from Pink Floyd’s classic 1974 album Dark Side Of The Moon come to mind.
“Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day… Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way…”—Pink Floyd, Time
The level of disengagement of so many people today saddens me, for both themselves and for our communities in general.
For we are a communal race. We live in groups. Only through engagement in the group do we find our identities, ‘meaning,’ and fulfillment.
“Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town… Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.”—Pink Floyd, Time
Social disintegration is exactly what it sounds like. It is when the group or nation fragments and falls to pieces, atomizes, dissolves. As a result we suffer psychic dissociation as we lose our sense of belonging, experience a loss of identity, and depression.
If you haven’t a group or a community get off your phones, look around, and go find one!
It’s not always easy.
But Life shouldn’t be easy.
