“Everything in life is evolving. It is simply a force in incessant transformation which germinates and expands and dies in the infinite world of forms, allowing no chance for the mind, which is aware of all this, to arrest its movement between the forms for a single moment or to isolate it from the complex ensemble which all, without an instant of repose, assist in forming and in destroying.”—Elie Faure, Modern Art

Why, since returning to Montreal with all its cultural vibrancy, do I feel the urge to revisit Elie Faure? Because he sings to me, more than ever. Because he is a kindred spirit, a fellow Life lover and universalist. He would know precisely what I mean when I say ‘Life is ALL there is.”

And I’ll tell you something, you artists—you would be genuine artists who might somehow be reading this—that part about “allowing no chance for the mind…to arrest its movement,” is absolutely crucial to comprehend. Because today the pervasive illusion our scientifically oriented modern world has deluded itself into believing is that it CAN arrest Life’s movement, into ideas.

And know, this modern mania for shoe horning Life’s ever ongoing Flow into dead sterile ideas is destined to fail, one way or another.

That’s the scary part today though, the one way or another.

Here, at the Omphalos Cafe, we sing the one song imperative for the age: that “everything in Life is evolving.”

  Go outside and listen.
